Aubrey Fitzosbert Ward (d. 1948) began his buying spree of Barbadian plantations in 1908, acquiring the 386 acre Mount Gay in St. Lucy ten years later in 1918.  The rum was distilled at St. Lucy and from 1926 bottled at Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd. in Bridgetown.  A. F. Ward's name remained on the Mount Gay label until the 1990s.
