Der Lachs was founded in Danzig (Gdansk) in 1598 by Ambrosius Vermeulen, the inventor of Goldwasser, a liqueur flavoured with roots and herbs and noted for the inclusion of gold flakes in the bottle. In the 16th century, alchemy was at its high point and gold was deemed to have several health benefits. Der Lachs ('The Salmon') opened another factory in Berlin in 1922, and by 1945 had ceased production in Danzig when the city became part of Poland. The initials I W L that span the Star of David emblem on the shoulder label and seal refers to Isaac Wed-Ling in Isaac Wed-Ling Wwe. & Eydam Dirck Hekker.
