This softy-spiced version of Tanqueray Gin was originally developed in 1839 for the Far East market and is named after the straight of Malacca, a narrow waterway separating the Malaysia Peninsula and the Indonesian Island of Sumatra, in turn named after the areas 15th century ruler, the Malacca Sultanate. A sweeter gin with less juniper emphasis and more citrus than the classic London dry, it was reintroduced in 1997, but sadly discontinued by 2001, inspite of it's popoularity with bartenders as a stand in for Old Tom gin. It was revived again in 2013, when a run of 100,000 bottles was produced. This bottle from the late 1990s revival was imported to the USA by Schieffelin & Somerset Co., New York.
Some interesting article about the now almost 200 year history of this gin variant have been produced. Goggle them and read up! Interesting stories.
