Bowmore was the first licensed distillery on the island of Islay and has stood against the weather and the trends since it was built in 1779. It is one of the oldest distilleries in all of Scotland. Over the years the distillery has been owned by several people, but the one we're interested in here is John Bell Sherriff. In 1887, during a depression in the whisky market Sherriff purchased the distillery, only to sell it in 1892. In 1925 Sherriff got the itch again and once more bought Bowmore until it was sold once more to Stanley Morrison in 1963. The bottle we have here would have been distilled under the Sherriff group, thus the label refers to the brand as Sherriff's Bowmore. This whiskey is a contemporary of the famous Black Bowmores.
