The story of this South African distillery can be traced back to Captain James Sedgwick (1811-72), a man regarded as one of the leading liquor industry forerunners of his time. His career had initially begun on the high seas in 1833, where he worked as a midshipman for the British East India Company and taken command of his first ship – the clipper Undine. Eventually, in 1850, he retired and set about to establish a new life. He founded the firm J. Sedgwick & Co. in Wellington, a purveyor of quality liquor, tobacco and cigars, which he ran until his death in 1872.
