Having founded his company in Bordeaux in 1851, Jules Honoré Sécrestat (1822-1905) created his eponymous Bitter in 1859. A red vermouth flavoured with Gentiane, Bitter-Sécrestat was so popular by 1878 that he moved into a new factory designed by the architect Ernest Minvielle in the centre of Bordeaux. He also produced other beverages such as Toni-Kola using Kola nuts from Guinea, a French colony from 1887 to 1958, appreciated for their high caffeine content and refreshing properties. Toni-Kola received awards at the Expositions Universelles of Bordeaux in 1895 and Paris 1900.
