The Great Comet of 1811, formally designated C/1811 F1, was discovered on March 25, 1811, by French astronomer Honoré Flaugergues (1755-1830). It was visible for an unusually long period, around 260 days, the longest recorded visibility until the appearance of Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997.
The 1811 vintage was particularly favorable for winemaking, especially in regions like Bordeaux, Cognac, Champagne, and Sauternes. Many producers, particularly in Cognac, still celebrate the 1811 vintage, including images of stars on their labels as a tribute to the comet.
