Records indicate that rum production commenced there as far back as 1741 and took place there for 220 years before the original distillery was shut down due to an oversupply of Jamaican rum following the second world war. Amazingly, in 340 years the estate has been owned by just three different families, the most recent being the Clarke’s, who bought it in 1918. Gordon, the great-grandson of the first Worth Park Clarke submitted plans for a new state of the art distillery in 2005, which produced its first spirit two years later. It produces pure single rum from its own estate molasses on its sole double-retort pot still from Forsyths in Scotland. This is where Pittyvaich once stood. Established in 1975 by Arthur Bells \u0026amp; Sons, the distillery had a single purpose and that was to provide content for the Bell’s blend. It was a fairly simple construct, often described as little more than a shed, which eventually housed 4 stills that produced as much whisky as possible. Pittyvaich was unglamorous as distilleries go and very little of it was released as a single malt. That changed in 1991 when it made its Flora \u0026amp; Fauna debut as a 12 year old and occasional independent bottlings appeared to satisfy curiosity. The end came in 1993 when distilling stopped in the shed and it was demolished in 2002. The company’s success brought expansion, and through the latter half of the 20th century it acquired brands such as ESA Fields and Doorly’s for its portfolio. In 1995 they opened the Foursquare distillery, converting an abandoned sugar factory in the Saint Philip parish.
